Sponsored Heirlooms is brought to you by our sponsors. Every memory has a paywall. The exhibition asks: how much does it cost to keep a memory? It came from paying for Google Photos and iCloud. I pay every month to keep access to my photos, my emails, and my contacts. If I don't have enough storage, I lose my photos forever. Everything has become a subscription, and it is always billed by the month. I compare that to necessities like electricity and power, the kinds of companies I parody in the show. Even enjoying your family life comes with a cost. Your life isn't even yours anymore. To exist, you either pay the subscription or you are sponsored by a brand, and you have to show that brand off all the time, even in your memories.
Sponsored Heirlooms was made possible by the Individual Artist Grant from the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture.
